GIEVES & HAWKES Travels To Iceland For Its Autumn/Winter 2019 Campaign
The Gieves & Hawkes Autumn/Winter ’19 collection represents the very best of modern British style. Under the direction of Creative Director, John Harrison, the house has reinterpreted its heritage of military tailoring, exploration and adventure, to deliver a collection that is functional and luxurious in equal measure, offering ample protection against the elements this winter.
Shot against the harsh backdrop of Icelandic coastline, frozen fjords and Spartan cliffs, the collection was captured by photographer Adam Whitehead in several of Iceland’s most famous locations, including Sólheimajökull glacier and Reynisfjara’s black sand beach.
Heroic wide-lens shots of the Nordic landscape contrast against an elegant collection of refined winter tailoring. Whether a double-breasted camelhair coat in front of Reynisfjara’s crashing waves, a polished three-piece suit and tie against towering ice-covered cliffs, or a plush velvet jacket shot in the island’s frozen tundra, the campaign sets Gieves & Hawkes’s luxury British menswear in a rugged and resilient context.
The campaign also draws a link between this season’s contemporary tailoring and the house’s role as an outfitter to the Royal Navy. Deep shades of midnight blue, navy and indigo in the collection reflect a cold Northern coast line, while slate grey, charcoal and graphite tailoring echoes the freezing rock face seen throughout the campaign imagery. Warmer shades of rust and ginger in some signature suits and knitwear inject a touch of warmth into the collection’s palette, mirrored by Iceland’s heather-covered flatlands.
Similarly, textured fabrics take precedence over bold patterns this season, reflecting the Icelandic terrain and adding a sense of British understatement to the collection’s designs. These textures run through the collection’s outerwear – in the double-faced wool melton greatcoat in ink, or the ginger wool and alpaca split-raglan coat layered over a sharp checked suit – lending a strong, masculine impression to the campaign.
With its handsome suiting, substantial overcoats and elevated casualwear, this season’s Gieves & Hawkes collection is designed with quality and longevity in mind. The campaign depicts British menswear at its most luxurious, and its most robust. Perfect for the well-dressed man of today.
